Tomoko Azumi ( born in 1966 in Hiroshima, Japan) followed a course for architecture at Kyoto City University of Arts ( 1985-89) before she started working for an architect’s office in Tokyo. Later she studied furniture design at The Royal College of Arts (1993-95). For 10 years Tomoko worked at the Design Partnership AZUMI before she started the ‘tna Design Studio’ in East London.
tna Design Studio consists of a multicultural design team under the supervision of Tomoko Azumi. Since the foundation in 2005 the studio has executed a wide range of design projects in the field of furniture, interiors, exhibitions and products. They also organise workshops and do research projects.
Tomoko Azumi is involved in BA and MA courses. She is a member of various boards including the D&AD Design Award, UK; imm Köln Design Award, Germany and the Good Design Award, Japan.
The 1:16 collection came about under influence from her work as an interior and furniture designer, her interest in the possibilities of paper and diorama’s, which she collects.
